Why Dpdo Exists

It all started with a simple observation: DSD is the closest thing to analog in consumer digital audio — yet the tools for high-quality PCM→DSD conversion were dominated by a handful of foreign commercial products: closed-source, expensive, and impossible to verify.

As an engineer deeply rooted in DSD audio architecture, we decided to build it ourselves — no third-party DSP libraries, starting from first principles, implementing our own conversion engine line by line. That is how Dpdo began: a tool an audio engineer wrote for himself, which grew into a toolchain for everyone.

Development Goals

Dpdo's development revolves around three core goals:

1. Technical Excellence

  • Fully in-house: from noise-shaping algorithms and resampling kernels to the DST codec, everything is self-implemented with no third-party DSP libraries
  • 64-bit double precision: double-precision floating point across the entire chain, pushing error below measurable levels
  • 15th-order IIR noise shaping: among the highest orders publicly implemented in the industry, chasing the limit of in-band noise

2. Complete Workflow

DSD production should not be a patchwork of scattered tools. Dpdo covers the full loop — recording, conversion, authoring and playback — so professionals and audiophiles complete the entire job within one coherent toolchain.

3. Trustworthy Results

  • Every conversion is reproducible and auditable
  • Conversion reports and spectral analysis make results verifiable by measurement
  • CLI-first design: scriptable, AI-friendly, embeddable in automated pipelines

Philosophy

Sound quality is not mysticism — it is engineering. We believe every audible difference has a measurable cause, and every measurement should withstand blind listening.

  • Verifiability over parameter stacking — high orders and high ratios are means, reproducible results are the end
  • No import worship — audio algorithms have no borders; full in-house development keeps every step under control
  • Long-term commitment — the toolchain evolves continuously (currently v6.66), and every release passes rigorous testing

About the Developer

Dpdo is developed independently by a professional DSD audio architect, specializing in:

  • PCM → DSD conversion algorithms and signal processing research
  • SACD ISO authoring and DSD audio format engineering
  • Quality assessment and auditing of audio software

From algorithm derivation to CLI design, from DSP implementation to format compatibility testing — all done by one person. This means the design intent of the entire toolchain stays consistent: no departmental silos, no features built just for demos.

Commercial & Services

The Dpdo suite is closed-source commercial software — we believe tools should win on quality, not on open-source traffic. Source code is not public, but the prebuilt binaries are rigorously tested and ready for professional production.
